Now you see him, now you don’t? He’s one of Australia’s most popular magicians, so you could be forgiven for thinking Matt Tarrant might do the disappearing act on you.

“I am currently planning our next trip to the United States with Flight Centre where we will spend around a month across San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Miami and end up in New York,” says Tarrant from his home base in Adelaide.

The bright lights of the Big Apple are a long way from the beachside suburb of Brighton where Tarrant went to school, albeit reluctantly, before launching his career in magic.

Touting himself as a Magician/Mentalist – “Mentalism is a form of magic which entails the likes of cold reading, mind reading and hypnosis,” explains Tarrant – the 28-year-old has built a steady following on the back of some show-stopping performances at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

Now he’s got his sights set on the United States and meeting up with at least one legendary name.

“It’s going to be a bit of a whirlwind trip where I am lucky enough to be spending some time with some of the world’s best entertainers and explore some hidden local secrets,” Tarrant explains.

“I will be spending much of the time with some of my best friends who live in the United States, including magicians Kyle Marlett and Justin Flom, as well as my best mate and actor Sean James Murphy.

“He’s already organising a few awesome hangouts with some amazing people, including Xena the Warrior Princess, which I think will be my favourite moment of the trip.”

The much-travelled Tarrant is no stranger to the road and says that of all the places he’s been to in the world, Japan remains a firm favourite.

“I love everything about Japan, it’s one of my favourite places to visit and Osaka is a clear highlight,” he says. “I was over there for the Cherry Blossom season a couple of years ago and it was such a beautiful time of the year to be there and there was a real festival vibe to the city.

“Osaka Castle and the aquarium are huge highlights and be sure to check out the Magic Bar/Shop French Drop for an amazing night out with some of the nicest magicians (you’ll ever meet).”

When he’s not on the road or performing for a slew of amazed audiences, Tarrant is most comfortable in and around his hometown of Adelaide.

A keen fan of AFL club Port Adelaide – he’s one of just 20 official club ambassadors – the amiable magician reckons South Australia has plenty to offer.

“Nothing beats coming back home and there is nothing better than spending a couple of days in summer down the coast at Port Elliot, or a few nights in one of our wine regions,” says Tarrant. “The Barossa is a favourite of mine.”

Further afield, the multi-award winning talent can’t wait to get back to that bastion of all things entertainment, Las Vegas.

“One of the craziest places on Earth, and I can’t wait to revisit it in May for a few nights of fun and magic,” Tarrant says of his upcoming trip to the Nevada nightlife hub. “It’s the home of some of the world’s greatest magicians and entertainers and I can’t wait to see their shows and spend some time getting to know them all closely.

“Nothing beats a real American burger and ribs either and I have no doubt I will come back twice my size,” he adds.

Perhaps the magician, who insists there are no hoary old rabbit-out-of-a-hat tricks in his decidedly modern set, can simply make any unwanted weight disappear without a trace?

The way he’s been racking up the plaudits along with the frequent flier miles, you wouldn’t put it past him.
