You can barely see any information on Matt Tarrant’s Fringe flyers for the giant ‘Fringe Award Winner’ badges on them. Going by his latest show, Honestly Dishonest, next year might be even harder.

Local shaman Matt kicks things off by stating up front that magic sucks and that he intends to wow us with misdirection and dishonesty. He enthrals the audience for an hour with a mixture of card tricks, mind magic and elaborate stunts that’d leave even the most sceptical punter scratching their head.

This year, Matt’s return to the Fringe sees him fly solo in this show, a move away from his regular two-man act. He doesn’t struggle at all to make up for the lost sidekick, commanding the stage well and getting a few giggles with his mid-trick banter, but the gasps of amazement drown out the laughs.

There is plenty in this show for the audience, with many tricks involving multiple members of the audience, meaning that heaps of people had a chance to get involved rather than the couple of lucky ones on stage.

Matt Tarrant might start the show with “magic sucks”, but there’d be very few people in the audience agreeing with him after his enchanting display. He firmly deserves the plaudits. Make this a show you see while you can! –Andy Ruzgar
